The biblical origin of English words

英語の言葉「goodbye」の語源は「God be with you」だと知っていましたか?
Did you know that the English word 'goodbye' originally came from 'God be with you'?

Even most native English speakers don't know that but it's true.

Quieter than a Speeding Bullet

Did you know that the designers of Japanese bullet trains copied kingfisher birds to help overcome a design problem?

Once again God’s creation is superior to man’s designs.

This field of science is called biomimicry – copying design in nature. Copying the creatures that God has created.

Bible Prophecy about iPhones? iPhone

This morning I read a verse in the Bible that is a prophecy about portable electronic devices like iPhones and iPads!

Psalm 81:12 “So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.”

Maybe it’s not so funny in Japanese but in English this pun works because the word device has two meanings. (Electronic device, and device meaning selfish greed.)

Bible verses about Fear

"Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety." Proverbs 29:25

“Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Phillipians 4:6-7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." 2 Timothy 1:7

Bible verses about Evolution

Did you know that the Bible Prophesies about Evolution?

2 Peter 2:1-3 “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.”

2 Peter 3:3-5  “Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.”

Romans 1:25 “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

2 Thessalonians 2: 9-12 “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.”

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse”

Bible Verses about Astronomy

“God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing.” Job 26:7 NLT

“God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to him! He spreads out the heavens like a curtain and makes his tent from them.” Isaiah 40:22 NLT

“Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth below. For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing. The people of the earth will die like flies, but my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never end!” Isaiah 51:6 NLT

“I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies”
Genesis 22:17 NIV

Behemoth - Dinosaur in the Bible

Behemoth (Hebrew בהמות, behemoth) is a very large beast that must be a dinosaur. (Probably a Sauropod).
Unfortunately the translators of the 2 most popular Japanese Bibles have translated the Hebrew word Behemoth as hippopotamus (kaba

However it is impossible for it to be a hippo if you read the description.

According to the description Behemoth is a huge animal - most likely the largest animal God made.

It has a tail like a cedar tree. (This would have been a Lebanese cedar and not a Japanese cedar, although both kinds of cedars are massive trees.) Hippos have tiny tails, but Sauropod dinosaurs have huge tails.

The reason that the translators used the word hippo for behemoth is because they have been influenced by the false idea that dinosaurs lived millions of years before people.

So they think that it would be impossible for people in the time of Job (about 2000BC) to see living dinosaurs.

Job 40:15-19 “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.

16 What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!

17 Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.

18 Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.

19 It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword."

Bible Verses - Knowledge & Wisdom

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Colossians  2:3 “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”

1 Corinthians 1: 20 “Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”

1 Corinthians 3:18-20 “Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31 “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 2:5 “so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”

Bible verses about Creation

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” Matthew 22:29

“I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?” John 3:12 NIV

"For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything."  Hebrews 3:4 (NIV)

Romans 1:18-23 NIV
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”

Bible verses about Jesus

Genesis 1:1-3 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life and that life was the light of men.”

John 14:9b Jesus said: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”

Phillipians 2:5-7 "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness."
