20こうした知識人、学者、この世の重大問題にかかわる議論家たちについては、何と言われているでしょう。 神様は、彼らをみな愚か者とし、そんな知恵など無用の長物だときめつけました。 21この世がいかに人間のすぐれた知恵を結集しても神様を見いだせないのは、神様のお考えによることです。 そして神様は、一般の人には、ばかばかしくて話にならないような神のことばを信じる人を、救うことにされたのです。 22これは、ユダヤ人には、ばからしく思われるでしょう。 彼らは、説かれていることの真実さを証拠立てるような、天からのしるしを求めているからです。 また、それ以外の外国人にも、ばからしいと思われるでしょう。 彼らは、理性で納得できることとか、賢明と思われることしか信じないからです。 23それで、人々を救うために死なれたキリスト様について話すと、ユダヤ人は腹を立て、外国人は「まるでナンセンスだ」と言うのです。
24しかし神様は、ユダヤ人でも外国人でも、救いへと招かれた人々の目を開いて、キリスト様こそ彼らを救う偉大な神の力であることを、悟らせてくださいました。 実に、キリストご自身こそ、人々を救うための、神の知恵に満ちた計画の中心なのです。 25この、いわゆる「ばからしい」神の計画は、最高の知識人の最も賢明な計画より、はるかにすぐれたものです。 また、キリストの十字架上の死という神の弱さは、実は、どんな人間よりも強いのです。
26愛する皆さん。 自分たちの仲間を見回してごらんなさい。 キリスト様に従うあなたがたの中には、有名人や権力者や金持ちはほとんどいません。 27それどころか、神様は、この世では愚か者、無価値な者と思われている人々を、わざわざお選びになりました。 それは、この世で知恵ある者、りっぱな人とされている人々を辱しめるためです。 28神様は、いわゆるこの世で見下されている者、全く取るに足りない者を選び、そんな人々を役立てることによって、世間では大物と言われる人を、なきに等しい者とされたのです。 29ですから、どこのだれであっても、神の御前で自慢することはできません。
30というのは、あなたがたがキリスト・イエスによっていのちを確保できたのは、ひとえに神様のおかげだからです。 キリスト様は、神様の救いの計画を明らかにしてくださいました。 私たちを神様に受け入れられる者としてくださったのは、このキリスト様でした。 この方は、私たちを、きよく聖なる者とし、また、私たちの救いを買い取るために、ご自身を投げ出されたのです。 31旧約聖書の、「だれでも誇ろうとする者は、主のなさったことだけを誇れ」という、ことばどおりになるためです。
