This means that we cannot get to heaven by doing good
things. God gives salvation as a free gift. The motivation for doing good things
comes from gratitude to God. God’s grace does not come with obligation attached.
It’s not like obligation chocolate!
この意味は、人は良いことするから天国に行ける訳ではない、ということです。神様
による救いは無償の贈り物なのです。私たちが良いことをしようと思うのは、神様への感謝からです。神様の恵みは何らかの義務を伴うものではありません。義理チョコのようなものではありませんよ！
A famous story about love and grace is called “The Prodigal
Son”. It is a picture of the unmerited grace of God. Do you know this story?
The word prodigal has come into the English language from this Bible story and
almost all westerners know this story.
「放蕩息子のたとえ話」は愛と恵みについての有名なお話。神様の身に余る恵みの話です。この話を知っていますか？Prodigalという単語は聖書のこの話から英語に入って来た語です。殆どの西洋人はこの話を知っています。
Luke 15:11-32 ルカによる福音章１５：１１－３２
Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’
So he divided his property between them.
イエスはもっとよく説明しようと、また別のたとえ話もなさいました。
「ある人に息子が二人いました。ある日、弟のほうが出し抜けに、『お父さん。 あなたが亡くなってからじゃなく、今すぐ財産の分け前がほしいんだけどな。だめですか』と言いだしたのです。 それで父親は、二人にそれぞれ財産を分けてやりました。
“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he
had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild
living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that
whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out
to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He
longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one
gave him anything.
もらう物をもらうと、何日もたたないうちに、弟は荷物をまとめ、そそくさと遠い国に旅立ちました。 そこで放蕩に明け暮れ、全財産を使い果たしてしまいました。一文なしになった時、その国に大ききんが起こり、食べる物にも事欠く有様でした。それで、その地方のある農夫に頼み込み、畑で豚を飼う仕事をもらいました。あまりのひもじさに、豚のえさのいなご豆さえ食べたいほどでしたが、だれも食べる物をくれません。
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my
father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned
against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son;
make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his
father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him
and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around
him and kissed him.
こんな毎日を送るうち、彼もやっと目が覚めました。 『あーあ、家なら雇い人にだって、あり余るほど食べ物があるだろうな......。なのにおれときたら、なんてみじめなんだ。こんなとこで飢え死にしかけてる。そうだ。家に帰ろう。帰って、お父さんに頼もう。「お父さん。すみませんでした。神様にも、お父さんにも、罪を犯してしまって......。もう息子と呼ばれる資格はありません。どうか、雇い人として使ってください。」』
決心がつくと、彼は父親のもとに帰って行きました。ところが、家までは、まだ遠く離れていたというのに、父親は息子の姿を、いち早く見つけたのです。『あれが帰って来た。かわいそうに、あんな、みすぼらしいなりで......。』こう思うと、じっと待ってなどいられません。走り寄ってぎゅっと抱きしめ、口づけしました。
“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
『お父さん。ごめんなさいっ！ぼくは神様にも、お父さんにも、取り返しのつかないことをしでかしました。もう息子と呼ばれる資格はありません......。』
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the
best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So
they began to celebrate.
ところが父親は、使用人たちにこう言いつけたのです。『さあさあ、何をぼやぼやしている。一番よい服を出して、これに着せてやれ！宝石のついた指輪も、くつもだ。あっ、それから、肥えた子牛を料理して、盛大な祝宴の用意も忘れんようにな。死んだものとあきらめていた息子が生き返り、行方の知れなかった息子が帰って来たのだから。』こうして、祝宴が始まりました。
“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came
near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants
and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and
your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’
ところで、兄のほうはどうでしょう。その日も畑で働いていました。家に戻ってみると、何やら楽しげな踊りの音楽が聞こえます。いったい何事かと、使用人の一人に尋ねると、『弟さんが帰られたのでございますよ。だんな様は、たいへんなお喜びで、肥えた子牛を料理し、ご無事を祝う宴会を開いておられるのです』と言うではありませんか。
“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So
his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look!
All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet
you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes
comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
事情を聞くと、無性に腹が立ってきました。中に入るのさえしゃくにさわります。父親が出て来て、いろいろとなだめてみました。それでも気持ちはおさまりません。『私はこれまで、お父さんのために汗水流して働いてきたんですよ。言いつけにだって、ただの一度もそむいたことはありません。なのに、友達と宴会を開けと言って、子やぎ一匹くれたことがありますか。ところが、女にうつつを抜かし、あなたのお金を使い果たした弟のやつには、最上の子牛を料理して、お祭り騒ぎをするんですか』と、食ってかかりました。
“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and
everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because
this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
すると父親は言いました。『いいか、よく聞きなさい。おまえはいつだって、私のそばにいたじゃないか。私のものは全部おまえのものだ。だがな、考えてもみな。あれはおまえの弟なんだよ。死んだと思ってあきらめていたのに、無事に帰って来たんじゃないか。いなくなっていたのが見つかったんだから、お祝いするのはあたりまえじゃないか。』」神とお金の両方に仕えることはできない
