If there are many gods how would we know which one to listen to if they contradict each other?
もし多くの神がいてお互いに矛盾している場合には、どの神の言うことを聞けばいいのだろうか？

If there were many gods how could we know anything for sure about those gods unless they revealed themselves to us in some kind of spoken or written form?
もし多くの神いた場合、言葉や文字などで私たちに自分自身のことを明らかにしない限り、それらの神々について何を知ることができるだろうか？

If there were many gods that had real power and real love for us then wouldn’t they try to communicate with us in a clear way?

Psalm 96:5 “For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”

According to these verses everyone (including all Japanese people) know that there is a Creator God,
but people suppress this knowledge because of their sin.

¹⁶ While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. ¹⁷ He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there.

16アテネで二人を待つ間、パウロは市内を見物することにしました。　ところがどうでしょう。　町は偶像でいっぱいです。　パウロの胸には、むらむらと怒りが込み上げてきました。　 17黙ってはいられません。　会堂へ行き、ユダヤ人や敬虔な外国人たちと議論する一方、毎日広場で、そこに居合わせた人たちと論じ合いました。

¹⁸ He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said, “What’s this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he’s picked up?” Others said, “He seems to be preaching about some foreign gods.”

アテネでの混乱

¹⁹ Then they took him to the high council of the city.^[a] “Come and tell us about this new teaching,” they said. ²⁰ “You are saying some rather strange things, and we want to know what it’s all about.” ²¹ (It should be explained that all the Athenians as well as the foreigners in Athens seemed to spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.)

²² So Paul, standing before the council,^[b] addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, ²³ for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

22マルスの丘の広場に立ったパウロは、大ぜいの人を前にして、演説を始めました。

「アテネの皆さん。　あなたがたは宗教にたいへん関心をお持ちのようですね。　 23町を歩けば、必ず多くの祭壇が目にとまります。　ところで、その中に、『知られない神に』と刻まれたものがありましたね。　あなたがたは、この神様がどういうお方かも知らずに拝んでいるわけですが、私は今、この方のことをお話ししたいと思います。

²⁴ “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, ²⁵ and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. ²⁶ From one man^[c] he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

24この方は、世界と、その中のすべてのものをお造りになった天地の主です。　ですから、人の造った神殿には、お住みになりません。　 25また人は、この方の必要を満たすこともできません。　第一、この方には、必要なものなど何もありません。　かえって、すべての人にいのちを与え、必要なものは何でも、十分に与えてくださるのです。　 26神様は全人類を、一人の人間アダムから造り、すべての国民を全世界に散らされました。　あらかじめ、どの国が興り、どの国が滅びるか、いつそうなるか、何もかも決め、国々の境界をもお定めになったのです。

²⁷ “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. ²⁸ For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your^[d] own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ ²⁹ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.
27これもみな、人々が神様を求め、手さぐりしてでも神様を捜し出すためでした。　事実、神様は私たちから遠く離れておられるのではありません。　 28私たちは神様の中に生き、動き、存在しているのです。　あなたがたの詩人の一人が、『私たちは、神の子孫だ』と言ったとおりです。　 29もしこのとおりなら、神様を、金や銀、あるいは石のかけらなどで人間が作った、偶像みたいなものと考えるべきではありません。　
³⁰ “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. ³¹ For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

30今までは、神様はこうした無知を、見過ごしておられました。　しかし今は、すべての人に、偶像を捨てて神様に立ち返るようにと命じておられるのです。　 31神様の任命なさった方が正しいさばきを行なう日が、決まっているからです。　神様は、その方を復活させ、そのことの動かぬ証拠とされたのです。」

³² When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.”
32死人の復活にまで話がおよぶと、人々は笑って相手にしなくなり、中には、「ま、くわしいことはあとでお聞きしましょう」と言う人たちもありました。　
³³ That ended Paul’s discussion with them, ³⁴ but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the council,^[e] a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
33こうして、議論は終わりましたが、　 34数名の者がパウロの側につき、クリスチャンになりました。　市議会議員のデオヌシオや、ダマリスという婦人なども、その中に含まれていました。
